The Governing Body
Governors are drawn from all walks of life and represent the community served by the school. There are parent, staff, local authority, community and sponsor governors. Depending upon whether the school has a religious character, foundation governors will also be appointed by the local Diocesan Authority.
The main role of the governing body is to help raise the standards and performance of the school by supporting the work of the headteacher and the staff. Governors will support and, at the same time, challenge headteachers by gathering views, asking questions and deciding what is best for the school. Governors make important decisions on policies and strategies and have to stand by their decisions. The Governing body is answerable to parents and the wider community. Governors are required to play an active part in the decision making process of the school, getting involved in real issues.
Governors work closely with the headteacher, school staff and representatives from the Local Authority. They are responsible for:
- Raising standards of academic achievement;
- Recruitment of staff;
- Representing the views of the local community;
- Managing the budget;
- Promoting the values and ethos of the school.
Governors ask questions, gather information and help make decisions about the future operation of the school.
In Stockton, governors are supported in their role by the School and Governor Support Service who are available for advice, and will also provide training in the various areas of governance as requested by the Governing Body.
