As part of our careers education programme, pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Billingham took part in an exciting bridge-building challenge, thanks to the incredible education team at Sir Robert McAlpine.

This hands-on activity gave our pupils the chance to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in a practical and engaging way. Working collaboratively towards a shared goal, the children applied their engineering skills to design and construct a bridge together.

Throughout the challenge, pupils demonstrated:

  • Outstanding teamwork and communication
  • Resilience and perseverance
  • Creative problem-solving and critical thinking

The experience not only strengthened their understanding of engineering principles but also highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation—skills that are essential for future careers in STEM industries.

We are proud of the enthusiasm and determination shown by our pupils and grateful to Sir Robert McAlpine for providing such an inspiring opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications.
