Year 5 pupils from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Billingham recently enjoyed an educational visit to the SUEZ Recycling and Recovery Centre.

Learning About Waste and Energy

During the visit, pupils took part in a fascinating tour of the facility, where they learned how waste is processed and transformed into renewable energy. The experience gave them a clear insight into the journey of waste after it leaves our homes.

Hands-On Experience

One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to manoeuvre the cranes used at the plant. This hands-on activity helped pupils better understand how materials are handled and sorted on a large scale.

Linking to Classroom Learning

The visit linked directly to their Geography unit on climate change, helping to reinforce their understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Bringing Learning to Life

By seeing real-world processes in action, pupils were able to connect their classroom learning to practical applications, making the topic more meaningful and memorable.

This engaging trip supported pupils’ awareness of recycling, renewable energy and the importance of protecting the environment.
