Year 2 pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Billingham have been busy developing their food preparation skills through a fun and engaging Design and Technology project.
Exploring Flavours and Ingredients
The children began their learning by tasting a variety of fruits and vegetables. This gave them the opportunity to explore different flavours, textures and colours, helping them to decide which ingredients they might enjoy using in their own creations.
Designing Healthy Salads
After their tasting session, pupils designed their own healthy salads. They carefully selected ingredients, thinking about both taste and balance, while applying their knowledge of healthy eating.
Building Practical Skills
As part of the project, the children practised key food preparation techniques, including:
- Chopping
- Peeling
- Grating
They carried out these activities safely while building confidence in the kitchen.
Tasting and Sharing
Once their salads were complete, pupils enjoyed tasting their creations. They also shared what they liked about their dishes, celebrating each other’s ideas and efforts.
This hands-on experience helped develop creativity, independence and an understanding of healthy food choices.
