Year 1 had an exciting and educational celebration as pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Billingham took part in a vibrant and engaging Fred Frog Phonics Day. Phonics Bingo Brings Big Smiles
The day kicked off with a lively round of Phonics Bingo, where pupils eagerly listened out for sounds and matched them to their cards. With plenty of winners and even more laughter, this activity set the tone for a day full of enthusiasm and teamwork.
Interactive Phonics Games
Throughout the morning, children enjoyed a series of active phonics games. These hands-on activities helped pupils practise and recognise sounds through movement and play - an approach that supports memory, engagement, and language development.

Creating Alien Word Monsters
Year 1 also unleashed their creativity by designing their very own Alien Word Monsters. These silly, slimy, wonderfully weird imaginary creatures helped children explore nonsense words and practise decoding unfamiliar sounds - an important part of early reading.
